Designed specifically for photovoltaic (PV) powered solar heating applications, this very basic controller operates from any 12 or 24 Volt PV panel and/or battery and switches power to a DC circulation pump.  It uses 2 standard 10K temperature sensors to sense water temperatures.  If the temperature of the water coming from the solar collector is hotter than the stored water in the tank it turns on the pump. If the collector is cooler than the tank it turns the pump off.  What could be simpler?

The DTC-1 will prevent the loss of stored heat when collector temperatures dip below the stored water temperature by preventing the pump from circulating cooler water into the storage tank.  This typically happens on cold sunny mornings and in the afternoon when the storage tank temperature has peaked and the sun on the collector is dropping.  The solar panel will have enough power to continue running the pump long after the collectors have become cooler than the storage tank.  At this point flat plate collectors become radiators -- effectively removing heat from your storage tank.
